Predicates are words or groups of words which are considered as the most important semantic elements of the sentence. Following Manouilidou, Almeida, Schwartz and Nair, this research investigates the nature of verb disorder in Persian Alzheimer patients. To this end, the property of thematic role assignment by three kinds of predicates has been focused upon. The first kind of predicates includes those whose argument realization follows the standard hierarchical thematic role (e.g. kandan). The second type includes those whose argument realization violates the standard argument realization (e.g. tarsidan). The third type includes those which violate the standard hierarchical thematic roles (e.g. xoshnud kardan). Two monolingual Persian AD patients under the support of Iran’s Alzheimer Association and five matched elderly controls performed a sentence completion task in which they had to choose a predicate that would render the sentence grammatical and meaningful. AD patients showed no problems with canonical structures but performed worse than controls in psychological verb sentences. The results support the hypothesis that AD’s deficit is in the mapping between syntactic and semantic relation, particularly in the assignment of thematic roles to the arguments of the predicates.

Postposing is a feature of spoken language. It is a process that postposes a preverbal constituent to a position after the verb, without changing the overall meaning of the sentence. In this study we focus on this linguistic phenomenon and its relation to factors such as grammatical weight, definiteness, animacy and information structure. To investigate the occurrence of this process and its interaction with the mentioned factors, a spoken corpus of over 1900 sentences was analyzed. Data from this corpus showed that all mentioned factors except the animacy had some effects on postposing. In other words, the more definite and the longer the constituents are, the more postposing occurs.

This study investigates the conceptual metaphors of happiness in a representative corpus of Modern Persian. Making use of Persian Linguistic Database, we sampled a corpus of contemporary written texts, to represent modern colloquial Persian; then we tried to extract the relevant conceptual metaphors of happiness. The sample corpus contains 14 texts written by contemporary Iranian writers. Analyzing the corpus, we managed to extract 297 conceptual metaphors of happiness within 33 mappings. Then the most frequent conceptual mappings and source domains were determined. Due to the corpus driven approach in this research noticeable results were obtained. We tried to suggest the common source domains and name of the mappings for happiness metaphors. In this regard, source domains such as: “object”, “substance” and “action” are the most frequent. As an important finding of the present research, we could present embodied places of happiness. Moreover, we provided a comparison between the conceptual metaphors of happiness in Persian and English.

The Semantic Network of the Preposition 'ba' in Persian: A Cognitive Study
As one of the widely used prepositions in Persian, 'ba' (i.e. with) may also function as an adjective particle or affix. This paper studies various meanings of preposition 'ba' within a cognitive lexical semantics framework. It aims to show that the various meanings of this preposition do not emerge randomly. Drawing the image schemas of the prototypical meaning of this preposition and also proposing a semantic network for it are two other objectives of this study. The results show that the preposition 'ba' has a systematic semantic network in which various distinct meanings can be classified into three meaning clusters. These meaning clusters include, matching, opposing, and situational clusters, which are scattered around the prototypical meaning of vicinity and accompaniment within a radial structure.

he main objective of the advertising discourse is to encourage its viewer or reader to buy goods. This dialogue contains several inductive functions, including inductive functions of action and tension. The function of the induced action is an action-induced origin, whereas the function of the inductive tension is induced by the action originated. Thus, tension-induced functions can be claimed to be the extension of the induction interaction. On the other hand, the induced action and tension advertisings have similarities due to the intellectual history of their creators. Therefore, this paper is to compare various aspects of domestic and foreign advertisements, which are active or tensive, and to confide the relationship between these two functions. Accordingly, in the present study examples of such advertisements as billboards, magazines and media on internet will be studied based on inductive action and tension functions.

In sociolinguistics, the role of factors such as level of education in different aspects of language has always been the focus of attention. The present research, which was conducted in Mashhad, seeks to study phonological processes among educated and uneducated speakers compared to Standard Persian. The data was gathered through field method and interview to analyze processes such as assimilation, vowel harmony, devoicing, metathesis, addition and deletion. The results indicated that the level of education is a distinctive factor in the speech of Mashhadi speakers. Highly educated speakers have much care in their use of words and mostly use the standard variations while the phonological processes in the speech of less educated ones deviate their speech from the standard. The only process which was found not to be highly influenced by education was the deletion process. It had a high frequency among all speakers. The data analysis has been provided in details and in different methods
