This study conducted a structuralist-semiotic research on Surah Yusuf, not as a linear text to be decoded, but as a stratified matrix of signs, temporal disjunctions, and narratological relays. The theoretical apparatus-drawing on Saussure’s foundational notion of difference as the generative condition of signification, Jakobson’s sixfold typology of communicative function, and Greimas’s actantial schema serves less to stabilize meaning than to reveal its procedural deferrals and systemic tensions. Through this triangulated lens, the surah’s semantic order unfolds not as a fixed narrative arc but as a field of shifting positions and iterative displacements: the actants (father, son, sovereign, seductress) do not merely play roles but circulate, refract, invert across relational axes. The dream, no longer a cipher awaiting translation, emerges as a floating signifier that retroactively organizes causality; the shirt (a material trace and affective index) becomes a palimpsest of loss, deceit, and recognition. The analysis showed a structural coherence that is not reducible to chronology but is rather produced through a diachronic unfolding in which signification is a function of both repetition and rupture. Here, temporal progression and symbolic condensation are not opposed but entangled. By assembling a semiotic-narrative method that navigates between abstraction and textual immanence, this study suggests a critical grammar for engaging the Qur’anic narrative not as inert scripture but as an unfolding discourse of signs susceptible to syntagmatic torque, symbolic overcoding, and hermeneutic excess.
